3. Pivot

If there is a problem or issue with the pilot data then the focus moves to the Pivot node. Here the researcher can ask the question: “Is the issue or problem in the pilot data actually something interesting in its own right?” If the answer is yes, then the researcher can perform a pivot – a complete change in direction, a revision of the original research question. This can be one of the most beautiful and exciting moments in science – an accidental discovery.
